A screencast for students. The lesson was they were to outline all of my mistakes and how I could have prevented them. Specifically with regards to the audio and video. You may notice the background, lighting, and lack of an external mic. But since I was going to make them watch a short video to critique I did try to have the video have some useful content. This time the video contains a quick tutorial on using Zotero to download multiple articles at once for reading later and a reminder that it backs up all of your research in the cloud.
The primary point of the lesson though is the importance of taking the extra time to use an external mic (even the simple earbud mics will help with the fan noises), and if you’re going to be on camera to watch for your background and where the light is coming from.
The extra two minutes can save a whole lot of time if you need to redo the video because you were careless.
My own pre-recording checklist is a simple one. I only check for:
- Framing
- Visual Background
- Background Noise
- External Mic Check
- Lighting Check
Do you have a pre-recording checklist? What do you have on yours?
Here is a link to the PDF version I use in the field: prerecording_checklist
